Hotel Statler, Detroit 1928 Menu Art

Statler Hotels was one of America’s earliest chain of hotels. Founder Ellsworth Milton Statler was a visionary businessman who was the first to introduce hotel rooms with private baths. He also introduced the “do not disturb” sign, complimentary newspapers and writing supplies for guests. These were not luxury hotels – the room rate was a dollar and a half – but they were clean and comfortable and patronized by a population that was newly mobile thanks to the automobile. This art deco menu, which shows an elegant couple at dinner, was created during the Prohibition era by an in-house artist for the Hotel Statler Detroit, which opened in 1915. It matches a similar menu cover for the Hotel Statler in Boston (also featured on our website) which opened in 1927.
