This 1940s “chicken dictionary” is a marvellous example of the creativity and wit of vintage menu art. It was designed for The Chicken Hut restaurant in Washington DC. Using the motto – “an unusual eating place where Chicken is King,” the restaurant offered seventeen chicken dishes which are beautifully illustrated and humorously described. Such a lot of effort must have gone into this and its charm remains, even after decades. Nor did the inventiveness end there – the drinks list is chicken-themed too. There’s even a chicken barman ready to serve with the words: “what’ll it be, gents?
