Masconomo House, Manchester-by the Sea, Massachusetts 1881

Lafitte, St Julien, Margaux … visitors in the 19th century who stayed at the Masconomo House hotel, certainly had good clarets to drink with their meals. This inn in Manchester-by-the sea, Massachusetts, was owned by Junius Brutus Booth Jr., brother of the man who assassinated Abraham Lincoln. This 1881 menu cover is an elegant painting of a woman reading a book and shielding herself from the sun with a parasol on Singing Beach, which lay below the hotel. Masconomo house was named for the chief of the Agawam tribe that once populated the area. Booth died at Masconomo House on September 17 1883.
