Bradford Football Club Annual Ball 1885

£20.00

This 1885 menu illustrates how wealthy the northern English city of Bradford was at the end of the 19th century. Hence British playwright and poet T.S. Eliot's line from The Wasteland: "As one on whom assurance sits, as a silk hat on a Bradford millionaire." The rugby football club's annual ball was a real feast. Attendees were offered five different roasts, two pies, two boiled birds and the local Yorkshire ham. There was a choice of two great English puddings, apple and rhubarb tart with custard. Two champagnes were also on offer, Roederer's Carte Blanche (Extra Dry), and a long lost house and style, Rittscher's White Dry Sillery, the still champagne that was featured widely on wine lists in the latter part of the 19th century but has now virtually vanished. The floral menu cover design was typical of the era.
